Getting ffmpeg
Most conversions use macOS itself. A few formats need ffmpeg, a free, open-source helper that also runs on your Mac. Orange finds it on its own once it’s installed.
What needs it
- Audio to MP3, OGG, Opus or WMA
- Video to or from MKV, WebM, AVI or WMV, and GIFs from those
- Images to WebP (or the separate WebP tools)
- Actions on videos macOS can’t open itself
Everything else, including HEIC, JPG, PNG, PDF, MP4, MOV and M4A, works without it.
A one-click download is coming
The next Orange update adds a free ffmpeg add-on you can download from inside the app, with no setup. Until then, the quickest way is below.
If you use Homebrew
Open Terminal and run:
brew install ffmpegFor WebP as well, also run brew install webp. Then try your conversion again; Orange picks ffmpeg up straight away. Settings → Formats shows Installed once it can see it.
If you don’t have Homebrew
You can wait for the one-click add-on in the next update, or install Homebrew first from brew.sh and follow the step above.
